Educational Visit to the FabLab of Start Smart SRL: a super-technological experience for years 7 and 8 Oxford Group Lecce
On 29 May 2024, the first and second-year middle school classes of the Oxford Secondary School in Lecce had the opportunity to participate in an educational outing at the laboratory Start Smart SRL FabLab.
The initiative, part of the project “IT… and more”and curated by Prof. Salvatore Papa, a teacher of mathematics and technology at the school, has allowed students to immerse themselves in the practical applications of modern digital technologies.
Laser Cutting Workshop
During the visit, the boys took part in a laser cutting workshop, a technology that uses a laser beam to cut materials with extreme precision. After a detailed explanation of the process stages and the machinery involved, the students watched the creation of personalised wooden tiles with the Oxford Institute's logo and name. They were able to understand how the digital drawing let it be transformed into a physical object through computer numerical control (CNC), a system that guides the machine's movements with extreme accuracy.
3D Printing Laboratory
Subsequently, students explored the world of 3D printing, a technology that allows for the creation of three-dimensional objects from a digital model. In this workshop, the students observed the creation of a bust of one of the students, made using a 3D scanner that captured the dimensions and features of the face, then transferring them to 3D printer. The ability to see an object take shape layer by layer has sparked great interest and wonder, showcasing the potential of 3D printing in sectors such as design, medicine, and engineering.
Virtual Reality Experience
The final leg of the visit took the students to the engaging virtual reality world (VR). Using advanced VR headsets, the children experienced the thrill of an ultra-realistic rollercoaster ride. Furthermore, they discovered how virtual reality can be applied in various production sectors, from training aeroplane pilots to simulating environments for education and professional training.
Conclusion
The educational trip to the FabLab at Start Smart SRL was a unique opportunity for students to understand the practical applications of digital technologies. Thanks to this experience, the students were able to develop fundamental skills in an increasingly connected and technological world, enriching their knowledge base and sparking their curiosity towards IT and technological disciplines.
The Professor Salvatore Papa he highlighted the importance of these initiatives for stimulating students' interest and preparing them for future challenges. The enthusiasm and interest shown by the pupils are proof of the success of this training day.
