Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

This is the ideal course if you wish to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the English language while simultaneously improving your career opportunities.

The Delta course is designed for English language teachers working in any teaching and learning context. The Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification demonstrates your dedication to learning and provides you with skills and competencies that will help you and your students grow beyond expectations!

The Delta is the most prestigious, recognised and valued practical English language teaching certification. The Delta certification is accredited to level 7 of Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) of the UK government from the’Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual, the UK government's exams regulator).

Ofqual has stated that, in the European Union, The Delta certification at Cambridge ESOL It is equivalent to a master's degree or a professional diploma. The Delta is the only English language teaching diploma currently recognised at this level.

As a required prerequisite to access many Academic leadership roles, This certification is a good starting point for those who want to become senior teachers, teacher trainers, or managers.

To access the Delta, you need an advanced level of English (C1+ on the CEFR) and at least one year of teaching experience, although we recommend having as much experience as possible before undertaking this course.

The Delta is made up of of three modules varied and is flexible: you can take each module individually, at different times and in no particular order, or you can take all three modules at the same time. There is no time limit within which you must take the modules. All modules include a focus on theory and practice. You will receive a Cambridge Delta certificate after successfully completing each module, but you must complete all three modules to receive your Cambridge Delta Diploma.

MODULE 1

Module Delta 1: Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching

This module focuses on expanding and developing candidates' knowledge and understanding of English teaching and learning in a wide range of contexts.

The focus is on the teaching background, the underlying theory, practical applications, and how these are influenced by applied linguistics and language learning theories. Topics include, for example:

  • Various teaching approaches and methodologies
  • Linguistic systems and linguistic problems of students
  • Knowledge of resources, materials, and reference sources for language learning

Regarding the upcoming course

  • Next online course: 24/10/2024 – 18/05/2025
    • Frequency: Thursday (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM)
  • Assessment: Written exam – two papers – each lasting 90 minutes. You can find sample tests in the Delta Manual for Tutors and Candidates. These sample tests show you what the full test looks like and the types of questions you can expect. MODULE 2

Module Delta 2: Professional Practice Development

This module focuses on developing awareness and experience in the principles and professional practice of teaching English in a wide range of contexts.

This is the largest part of your Delta and the one that has the greatest impact on your professional career. It is here that you will create a portfolio of your teaching and assignments to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of English, learners, materials and methodology.

You will research and write essays on English language systems and skills development, plan lessons and teach based on your research. During the course you will be observed and receive feedback on planning and teaching, as well as observe other teachers yourself (there is a minimum requirement of ten hours of observation – this is incorporated into the teaching practice).

The topics include:

  • Preparation for Teaching
  • Learning management and support
  • Lesson preparation and teaching
  • The language learner and the language learning environment
  • Assessment, selection and use of resources and materials for teaching purposes
  • Observing and evaluating other teachers' lessons

Further information

  • It is recommended that candidates for the Delta 2 module hold a degree or a prior teaching qualification (e.g. CELTA), as well as at least two years’ full-time teaching experience (e.g. 1,200 hours) within the last five years. Ideally, this teaching experience should cover a variety of levels and contexts.
  • The candidate is also recommended to have successfully completed Delta Module One.

Please note: Candidates who do not strictly meet the admission criteria but who demonstrate that they are capable of successfully completing the course may still be admitted. Decisions on admission are at the discretion of the centre.

  • Assessment: a portfolio of work completed during the course, including lesson observations. This module requires you to attend a course run by an approved DELTA centre so that your teaching can be supported and assessed. Module 3

Delta 3 Module
  • Next presentation date: 3/6/2024
    • Open to external candidates
    • Closing date for registrations: 6/5/2024
  • Option 1: expansion of ELT practice and specialization. You will conduct an independent investigation, which will lead to the design of a course programme. Some of the specialisations include:
    • Tuition for exam preparation
    • Business English
    • Teaching young learners
    • English for Specific Purposes
    • Teaching English to students with special needs
  • Option 2: Management of English language teaching. You will carry out a situation analysis which will lead to the design of a change proposal concerning a management area. The proposed modification should fall within one of the following specialisations:
    • Academic Management
    • Human resources management
    • Customer service
    • Marketing

To successfully complete this module, you will need access to administrative data from a relevant language teaching context.

REQUIREMENTS

To follow the Delta course, the following specific requirements are essential:

  • be fluent in English (advanced level, C1 or C2 and above)
  • to have at least one year of experience in English Language Teaching (ELT) (the more experience the better), in a varied and full-time context
  • to have a recognised initial qualification for teaching English (such as CELTA or equivalent).

Before contacting the centre, please check that you meet the following criteria:

  • Is your English good enough to teach at different levels? You should have a Upper C1 CEFR level.
  • Do you have at least one year of full-time English teaching experience in a variety of teaching/learning environments?
  • Do you have an initial qualification for teaching the English language, such as CELTA?

NB The centre may still accept you onto the DELTA course without an initial teaching qualification if you can demonstrate that you are likely to complete a course successfully, for example by providing evidence of successful previous study. If you are interested in applying for the second module and do not have an existing teaching qualification, then you would need to be observed by a qualified tutor prior to being accepted onto the course.
