In the tour of the schools in the municipal area, the mayor of Lecce, Carlo Salvemini, on Tuesday, 11 October 2022, paid a visit to the International Montessori School of Lecce, accompanied by the Councillor for Education Fabiana Cicirillo.
The pupils, from the youngest in Kindergarten to the boys and girls in lower secondary school, via the children in Primary school, welcomed the mayor with emotion and enthusiasm, intonando l'Inno Montessori.
Then the floor is given to the school's head teacher, Anna Grazia Buttazzo, who along with the head teacher, Carmen Indirli, played host, alluding to the history of the Oxford School. “You need no introduction – the mayor entered – Your 40 years of history in the Lecce area speak for themselves. You are an excellent school and this is undeniable.”.“In these years of Covid – Salvemini continued – We had to suspend these appointments, but today we can finally resume them.”
The reception of the children
Afterwards, the boys took turns reading some Highlights of the books that have struck their sensibilities the most, and which were suggested to them by teachers always attentive to the educational and personal development of their students, along with the most vivid and touching phrases:
We were happy. Everyone was happy. We were ashamed of how happy we were. And we knew well that we had become so because of the books and the voice that smouldered inside us, which sometimes saved you...
I took a few steps, I entered the cool water, I opened the book and began to read aloud by myself, and it seemed to me that I was reading, at that moment, at that hour, with that light and with that water, not just one book but all the books together, and all the people and cities, and the whole world, and the days past and those yet to come, all of life.
But where I live, surfing is as safe as walking blindfolded through a pack of lions. Last Saturday, there was a guy. He was catching waves on a surfboard he’d made himself. Like mine. He’s Israeli. His name is Samir. Samir and I were waiting for the same wave. But I wondered: will this wave we’re waiting for be Israeli or Palestinian?
“Now I was pedalling, pedalling harder and harder, towards a life that was entirely to be written. The bicycle was the inkwell with which to do it, and its ink my desire to start everything from scratch.”
When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace. (Jimi Hendrix)
I offer you peace. I offer you love. I offer you friendship. I see your beauty. I hear your need. I feel your feelings. My wisdom flows from the highest Source. I salute that Source in you. Let us work together. For unity and peace. (Mahatma Gandhi)
Non c'è una via per la pace, la pace è la via.
